I believe that every student deserves a quality music education. The right to quality instruction applies to every type of student I teach: child or adult, beginner or advanced, average or gifted performer. Although I tailor my style and specific techniques to the individual student, I make sure that each student learns proper technique, uses good quality music, and learns to read music well.
Experiences that Influence my Philosophy
When I began teaching privately, I had an image in my mind of what my potential students would be like. I imagined voice students who excelled in choir and wanted private lessons to help with All-District and All-State Choir tryouts. I imagined piano students who hoped to take private lessons for the next 10 years. Yet, as I received inquiries about lessons, I discovered that my potential students were vastly different from my image, and from each other. I accepted students from many cultures, educational backgrounds, and family situations. The more types of students I accepted into my studio, the more I grew as I teacher. I learned so much more about teaching music than I would have only teaching students who fit my prior image.
After teaching for over 10 years, I have learned to love teaching a diverse group of students. I have taught my share of traditional piano and voice students, and I love them immensely. On the other hand, I believe one of my strengths as a teacher is working with non-traditional students. I have taught piano, voice, and theory to adults who varied widely in career choice: stay-at-home mom, dentist, university professor, DMV worker. I have taught students with a variety of disabilities, including autism, dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and conduct disorder. Some of my hardest- working voice students were young adult males who played guitar, sang in a band, and wanted to learn how to sing better.
If you are interested in music instruction, I encourage you to contact me. I will listen to your unique situation and consider whether or not I would be an appropriate teacher for you. If not, I will help you find other teacher options.
